“So you are saying Jonah did not trust God?”
Correct. Jonah’s lack of trust resulted in the action to disobey.
When I first read the book of Jonah a few weeks ago, a lack of trust was not something I thought the Lord was going to reveal to me. While trying to decide what I wanted to read for my morning quiet time, I felt stuck. I sat there, with worship music playing, and just looked down at my Bible. Eventually, I decided to google the easiest book in the Bible to understand. A list of ten books showed up, and Jonah was towards the top.
I had not read the passage in a while so I figured why not? Little did I know, that google search would change the entire way I viewed life.
For those who do not know, the story of Jonah is a classic Sunday school story. I remember hearing this story many times in church when I was young. It is not too often you hear about a person getting eaten by a giant fish… and SURVIVING. God placed a call on Jonah’s life which consisted of preaching to the city of Nineveh. Out of fear, Jonah fled and went to Joppa and boarded a ship.
I know in my life, there are so many times I want to run away. The Lord calls me one way and as soon as I hear His words I want to do a 180. Just like Jonah, we see the “easy” way and try to take it. We focus on the now, where God focuses on the forever. When Jonah disobeyed the Lord by running away, he was only focused on himself. Jonah could only see what was happening right in front of him. He could not see the part of the story where the people of Nineveh turn from their evil ways and follow the Lord. Jonah could not see the ending, he only knew the difficult beginning.
Now, back to the story…
After Jonah boarded the ship, the Lord sent a storm to grab Jonah’s attention. All of the men were frantically seeking safety. They were praying to their own gods while Jonah was under the deck sleeping. Jonah was eventually thrown off of the ship and then swallowed by a huge fish. The Lord got Jonah in a place where he would listen.
After Jonah repented and prayed, the Lord saved him and gave him a second chance. Jonah was then asked to preach to the city of Nineveh and He obeyed. Great things came out of his obedience. Lives were changed and souls were saved.
Jonah’s Lack of trust resulted in Disobedience.
Let us talk about trust.
To me, before reading this story, trust was a feeling. I felt as though I trusted God. I felt as though I gave everything to Him. I felt as though everything was in the Lord’s hands.
But trusting is not just feeling, it is doing.
Walking in trust looked completely different than feeling like I trusted, but I did not understand that.
There is a worship song called “Spirit Lead Me” by Influence Music. There is a line in the song that says “If you say to trust, I will obey.” After hearing this song my entire view on trust was changed. Trust was no longer a “sit back and wait for the Lord” kind of thing, it is now a “go forward and walk” type of thing. Though feeling and walking coincide, at some point, you MUST walk.
Feeling trust would look like waiting around for the right person to come along to love you, or maybe going through the motions of school just to get your education done. It would look like dwelling in the place you are and looking at all the hurt. Maybe writing down that the Lord has it in His hands, then placing that truth in your back pocket while you continue to wait.
Taking action in trust would look like focusing on yourself UNTIL the right person comes along. Praying, seeking, and growing as much as you can before they step into your life and change it forever. Spoiler alert: You do not need to wait for your husband or wife to walk into your life before you start bettering yourself. Or maybe taking action in your life would be volunteering, busting your butt in school, and making connections while getting your education because you trust that the Lord has something great in store.
Another way to take action, and something I had to work so hard to do, is to heal. Yes, the Lord is the one healing you, but that does not mean you sit and watch while the Lord snaps His fingers and you wake up all better. Healing is a journey. A journey of praying, believing, walking, and TRUSTING. Rather than dwelling in my pain and hurt, I am walking. Everyday I am getting up and giving the day to the Lord. I am holding my tongue when someone says something hurtful. I am writing out truths, praying through scripture, believing that I will not hurt forever. I am taking the trials of today and making them growth for tomorrow.
Do you see the difference?
Feeling like you trust the Lord ends in obtaining a truth without receiving the result. Where walking in trust results in obtaining the truth and the result, or the growth. When the Lord asks you to trust, you cannot just sit back and say I trust you. You must walk in the trust and obey His command. Walking in that feeling and taking action results in the Lord growing you and teaching you. It results in obedience and healing. So start walking, even if you do not know where to walk, and the Lord will direct you. He is not asking you to know where you are going, but to simply say yes to Him and walk. He will bring people, wisdom, and Encouragment along at just the right time. And THIS is why you can TRUST in your walk. This is why we look at Jonah and see that if he would have gone and obeyed, he would not have had to endure the emotional distress he did. Once he began to walk, even with fear in his heart, he ultimately trusted the Lord and moved forward.
Jonah’s disobedience shows us that he did not trust God. He wanted to hide, rather than walk. But God did not let this define Jonah. God did His part When Jonah trusted.m
Your job is to trust and obey, let God move the mountains.
